People loved the film so much that they repeated the horrifying lines just to scare each other. By years end the academy handed out an award to the classic flick.
The storyline involved a character named Jack Torrance, his spouse, and son. After succumbing to alcoholism he takes his family to live in a large, haunted Colorado hotel. There he will act as caretaker during the off season when there is nobody living in it. The job seems like a great way to get away, but they will soon realize the buildings horrifying past.
Young son Danny had dreams about the haunted hotel for months before the family ever moved there. He sensed that there was evil emitted from every wall in the building. This was confirmed within days of moving in with his family.

Film highlights
There were many highlights during the movie that are still memorable to those who have watched it. They were the types of scenes that would chill the audience to the bone while entertaining them at the same time. Many of them still cause nightmares.
One memory evoking phrases of the film has to be the young son, Danny, repetitious phrase redrum. This was murder spelled backwards and was repeated by the youngster after going into a hypnotic trance. It was not only disturbing to his young mother, but sent chills up many viewers’ spines.
Another memorable moment was that of Danny riding his bike through the hotel. As he came to one particular passageway he saw two young twin girls standing at the end. These girls were ghosts of the previous owner’s daughters, who were killed years earlier.
A particularly creepy moment was when the child went into a room on one of the upper floors. There he was attacked by an elderly, unclothed woman who had died in the tub years before. His father quickly investigated and found the room to be occupied by a woman who, while still the same lady, looked entirely different. She seduced Jack and it was then when his entire demeanor changed.
Evil began taking over the man’s body and he soon became quite sinister. His wife and son began to worry about him and it was not long before they realized that he meant to kill them. This is evident when he takes an ax and busts through their bedroom door. A chase ensues and the movie comes to a climax.
The Shining is a true horror masterpiece that should not be missed by anyone. Although the film has its bloody moments, there is not nearly as much gore that is found in more current flicks. However, those who watch it are prone to long lasting nightmares.
